On-Campus Student Tips and Tidbits
Become familiar with Blackboard and Centra, even if you are meeting as a class on campus. You will still use both of these applications during your time at SIS.
If you feel you are missing that SIS connection despite being an on-campus student, join one of the student professional organizations or the Knoxville Cohort group to get more involved with the students and the program.
If you do not have much experience working in libraries or the information studies field, look for a job on campus in one of our libraries. There are many available and they are often announced on the SIS listserv.
Feel free to drop into Dewey's Den or the SIS Offices at any time. Many students hang out in Dewey's Den during the day, use the computers located there, or chat with professors whose offices are located in the same area.
Join Facebook or other social networking sites to connect with SIS students outside the classroom. This is particularly helpful in connecting with DE students whom you might not get the chance to learn a lot about.
Become familiar with Hodges! You will be in it often.
Also, become familiar with the Knox County Public library and the branch closest to you. Sometimes the items in Hodges are all checked out and you have to use the Public library to find the book you need for class.
Think about completing a practicum. They give you real world experience and provide an opportunity to apply what you have learned in the classroom.
